AUGUST 22--Among the items on the agenda at last night's meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard was a vote to permanently ban public nudity in the famously tolerant Vermont town. With an emergency ordinance that renders the behavior illegal about to expire in two weeks, board members and townspeople--from Bible thumpers to civil libertarians--spoke on the volatile issue before a final decision on the new ordinance. Below you'll find a copy of the proposal which defines nudity as "the showing of the human male or female genitals, pubic area or buttocks with less than a full opaque covering, or the showing of the female breast with less than a fully opaque covering of any portion of the areola." The board voted it down 3-2. So for now, Brattleboro's nudists will remain citation-free. (6 pages)
