DECEMBER 22--A 13-year-old boy was arrested Friday for using a permanent marker while in class at his Oklahoma City middle school, a violation of an obscure city ordinance.

According to an Oklahoma City Police Department report, the boy was spotted “in possession of a permanent marker” by Roosevelt Middle School teacher DeLynn Woodside. The 50-year-old educator told cop Miguel Campos that the student was “writing on a piece of paper, which caused it to bleed over onto the desk.”

Woodside, pictured at right, reported that the child, whose name was redacted by police from the report, attempted to hide the marker when she asked him for it. Strangely, Woodside’s Facebook page reveals that her “likes and interests” include the official “Sharpie Permanent Markers” page on Facebook.

Campos reported that he allowed Woodside, a seventh grade math teacher, to “sign a citation” against the boy, who was then transported to the Community Intervention Center, a juvenile holding facility. A police sergeant subsequently “booked the marker into the property room.”

A police spokesman referred to the student’s bust as a “citizen’s arrest” effectuated by Woodside.

The marker ban--which apparently is aimed at curbing graffiti--stems from a city ordinance making it illegal to possess spray paint or a permanent marker on private property (without the owner’s permission). (2 pages)

RobertP, Lets put some facts together here... Redrover = silly game we all played in school when we wanted to peg balls at our enemy. Obviously in love with her inner child, because they are the only ones who take her seriously. Ms. Woodside = silly teacher with same issues as Redrover.... Coincidence? I think not. Just thinking...if I was stupid enough to...well, this level would never happen in my life. But, I think they are one and the same person. Now doesn't that just make Redrover pitiful? I think so.

The ordinance CLEARLY states that contraband will not be brought onto PRIVATE PROPERTY without the permission of the owner... 1. This is PUBLIC PROPERTY it is a PUBLIC SCHOOL. 2. The child didn't have to get permission from the owner of the PRIVATE PROPERTY because this fat pig doesn't OWN the property the school sits on. @Redrover With as many times you've commented about this bold teacher and her heroic aprehending of this obviously extremely dangerous and violent criminal, it seems either A) You're attached or related to this "teacher," in some way; B) You are the lunatic wannabe superhero in question and are mounting a desperate effort to save the sinking ship that is your reputation and/or credibility; or C) You're quite possibly insane and are desperately hoping that through your 1,000 comment effort she'll notice you and you'll move off to live in the Bahamas together in eternal bliss. To follow up on a hunch - if we look at the demographic data for that school: Latest Data posted 2006-2007: 69% Hispanic, 15% White, and a mix for the balance. 79% Low Socio-Economic 43% Limited English The percent of hispanics is probably larger now, for they typically do not go down. It is very possible that this child was a Illegal Immigrant who did not speak much English and was disruptive in class. This teacher could very well be on the "front lines" in the fight against illegal immigration - using the only weapons she has at her disposal - The Law I wish the federal government would do the same.

There are about 961 students at that school. Divided between 3 grades or 320 students per grade. 69% of them are Hispanic so 221 students. 1 out of every 4 Hispanics are in this country Illegally so there are about 55 students at that grade level in that school that are Illegal Immigrants. The odds alone of this kid being an illegal immigrant are pretty good. I think the teacher knows that this child is one of the illegal immigrants so she was just doing her civic duty. LOL to the self graduating line.

Hmmmm, Sharpie possession was a misdemeanor...So I suppose if he had displayed a can of Krylon spray paint it would have been a felony??? Well my first comment was not popular but I will stick with it. Most middle schools now have resource officers that work in the schools. These are police officers. When a child refuses to to give an item or move from a room using verbal directions a lot of the time the resource officer will be called to handle the problem simply because the teacher or principal does not want the liability incurred by touching the child themselves. It is not usually a matter of the teacher dialing 911 to get the police it is, a lot of times, simply calling the office or using the intercom and the officer comes. Does anyone actually think the parents are going to drop everything to come to the classroom? How many of you wolves out there would be wanting to fire the teacher if she got into a wrestle for the pencil contest with the student? Does anyone think the officer would have been called if the child had just handed over the pen? Most of the people writing in this forum are dammed if you do and dammed if you don't writers. Could it have been handled diffrently? Sure it could have, but you and no one else here knows how many times this boy is in trouble per day or per week or his history with this teacher or officer. Odds are this boy has been in trouble many times before this incident.

When you pick a side and try to rationalize their behavior by inventing false background, you are essentially lying. The problem is that weak-minded people will seize on your lie and believe it. The truth, whatever it is, ends up buried under a mountain of speculation. It's just as likely that this teacher is approaching burnout and the kid was innocent. Remember, nobody has even proved that this school actually has a policy against markers. Until we have that proof, there's no reason to call the kid a gang member or habitual offender. Some teachers try to make up their own rules. I quote: "Girls, don't brush your hair in my class, and I won't pee in the corner". This from an English teacher educated at Notre Dame ! Who also read aloud a private letter from a football player at our school, seeking admission to Notre Dame. He publicly mocked the boy in front of his friends. He had a heart attack a few years later. When informed, his class had a standing ovation. I quote: "No talking in class on Fridays". This from another English teacher, an alcoholic who started her weekend binge on Thursday nights and thus had a hangover on Fridays. She would try to paint her fingernails, and end up with just a jagged stripe down the middle because her hands shook too much. She didn't teach on Fridays or allow anyone to speak.

So if the boy has been in trouble, do you suppose there is a reason to your theory (which btw, was NOT listed at all in this article, so it is simply your thoughts). Lets just say they are valid. So what you are saying is you condone treating a juvenile roughly (because I consider sending a child to kiddy jail for a marker on paper rough punishment) as a means to solve the trouble making problem, if there is indeed one. Seems like the teacher is the one with the issue. Because teachers are human too, they are all as susceptible to human emotions as the rest of us. It is quite possible...the teacher acted this way out of some form of jealousy or as a means to establish dominance over the student. Either way, it would be my "theory" just as your trouble-making is a "theory". You can argue the point of the teacher or parent/student all day. Trying to see things from the other's prospective sometimes is enlightening.

This teacher should NOT be fired - because on unemployment she'll be forced to feed herself and her FIVE kids(?) more fatty, starchy foods thus contributing to the nation's obesity crisis and put even more strain on healthcare! C'mon, this is a seventh-grader IN CLASS - not some ghetto "guest of our country" marking up buildings at 2 am in the morning! If anyone should be fired, it is the LAZY cop who obviously had NO interpersonal communication or critical thinking skills; if so, he would have easily calmed this situation instead of escalating it! And regarding this woman's right to privacy, she is a PUBLIC educator - I hope to give her a call and tell her to back away from the buffet!
