  • Before he was indicted for making illegal campaign contributions to Richard Nixon, George Steinbrenner considered singing for some leniency. According to this memo prepared by lawyers with the Watergate special prosecutor, Steinbrenner attorney Edward Bennett Williams said that his client had information on other illegal contributions, not to mention the sale of ambassadorships and a Teamsters slush fund. The offer was rejected, and Steinbrenner eventually pleaded guilty.
