Before he was indicted for making illegal campaign
contributions to Richard Nixon, George Steinbrenner
considered singing for some leniency. According to
this memo prepared by lawyers with the Watergate
special prosecutor, Steinbrenner attorney Edward
Bennett Williams said that his client had information
on other illegal contributions, not to mention the
sale of ambassadorships and a Teamsters slush fund.
Steinbrenner, whose offer was rejected, eventually
pleaded guilty to a felony conspiracy count as well as
a misdemeanor charge.
