Airborne Groping Of Flight Attendant Lands Man Behind Bars

A passenger who was flying from London to New York is facing a federal criminal charge after he allegedly placed his hand up the skirt of a flight attendant and “grabbed her genital area” and “began to run his fingers back and forth,” according to an FBI agent.

The incident, which occurred Thursday on a British Airways flight bound for John F. Kennedy International Airport, resulted in the arrest of Iurii Chumak, 53.

In a misdemeanor criminal complaint excerpted here, FBI Agent Thais Canin reported that the flight attendant has just provided coffee to Chumak when she turned away from him to serve other passengers across the aisle in row 42. As she “bent over slighty” to pour coffee, Chumak allegedly groped her.

A second flight attendant, Canin added, saw Chumak “grab the first flight attendant’s genital area” and immediately approached the passenger and placed him in restraints. The second attendant told the FBI that a male passenger had previously complained that Chumak--drinking from a bottle of Dewar’s--had “bothered and verbally abused” his wife.

When questioned by federal agents after the plane arrived in New York, Chumak said he “was drinking on the airplane, fell asleep, and woke up in restraints.” Chumak appeared Saturday in U.S. District Court for arraignment, and was ordered held on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer.

What else can we expect when the TSA gropes some pervert and he gets turned on plus gets drunk? I don't know why the airlines continues to serve alcohol like they do. I know it relaxes nervous fliers, but seems there's more trouble with drunks than with nervous fliers. And then there's the drunk nervous fliers to contend with.

While I can understand your frustration with TSA...this was an INBOUND flight to JFK. Now, I doubt that many British Airways planes originate in the US bound for the US...but I could be wrong. Put the blame where it belongs, not on the TSA. It resides strictly with the passenger...not with the TSA for getting him 'turned on' as you stated.

It's about time these leacherous men start learning that women are not fair game for them to touch whenever they want to. The behaviour is not only sexually inappropriate but also shows a childish personality while at the same time exhibiting how little control men have over their own actions. For years these offences were overlooked. Years ago, while working as an RN, I had my fair share of gropes. I was actually taught in nursing school to expect this from men because they are in a different environment than they are used to, which makes them feel insecure, so they may act out this way. We were to just try to "understand" that these poor men couldn't cope well in a hospital setting. I was madder than hell about it. I am so happy to see these immature jackasses get charged for their filthy behaviour. Perhaps men will start thinking twice before sexually assaulting women. The fact that he was drinking is the lamest excuse in the book and the judge should give him extra time just for claiming he didn't know what he was doing. Shame on this man and all others who show no respect to their fellow human beings. Unless you have been assaulted like this by men, you really can't truly understand how humiliating and maddening it is, especially back in my time when nothing was done about it. It still needs to be addressed more firmly in hospitals where still at times it is just ignored because management won't do anything. When that happens, nurses should call the police themselves and report these idiots so they can be charged with sexual assault and be put on the list of sexual offenders. That would follow them for life. Also, any man charged with this offense should have his name and mug shot put in the local paper since humiliation is a great deterrent. I hope they throw the book at Chumak and he gets "groped" in jail by his new "girlfriend" Rocky.
