Cops Nabbed Mitchell While Smart Missing

Nearly four months after allegedly kidnapping Elizabeth Smart, Brian David Mitchell was arrested and briefly detained by Salt Lake City cops for shoplifting.

According to this police report, the 49-year-old drifter was nabbed last September 27 at an Albertsons grocery store after pinching a flashlight, gum, and beer valued at $52.39. Mitchell, who first gave cops the aliases "Go with God," "Immenuel," and "Lueal," was given a citation and ordered to appear in court two weeks later.

When Mitchell skipped that court date, a judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

Police investigators first focused on Mitchell in October, when Elizabeth's sister, Mary Katherine, suggested that a handyman--known only to the family as Emmanuel--may have been involved in the abduction. (3 pages)
