Ex-DeLay Aide In Corruption Plea

NOVEMBER 21--A former aide to Congressman Tom DeLay today pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge and agreed to cooperate with an expanding criminal probe that appears likely to net powerhouse lobbyist Jack Abramoff and, perhaps, several elected officials. Michael Scanlon, a former Abramoff partner, admitted to conspiring to bribe public officials and agreed to a whopping $19 million restitution payment. In a detailed attachment to Scanlon's plea agreement, a copy of which you can find below, the former DeLay press aide admitted working hand-in-glove with Abramoff (identified only as 'Lobbyist A') to offer and provide 'a stream of things of value to public officials in exchange for a series of official acts and influence and agreements to provide official action and influence.' On the receiving end of this illegal largesse was, among others, Republican Bob Ney, who is identified only a 'Representative #1' in the plea agreement. Even by Washington standards, the alleged corruption of Ney by Scanlon and Abramoff--as detailed in the plea document--is remarkable. Scanlon, 35, is pictured at right during a recent congressional appearance.(8 pages)
