NASCAR Is Safer Than Fishing

MAY 23--Jeff Gordon's estranged wife claims that driving a race car at nearly 200 mph is not a dangerous job, and certainly not one that entitles the NASCAR star to additional hazard pay as the couple carves up its marital assets. In a recent divorce court motion, an excerpt of which you'll find below, Brooke Gordon argues that Jeff's fortune has been derived from a "relatively safe occupation" and that he is not entitled to a disproportionate share of the couple's loot, as he has previously requested. The driver contends that racing is a "hazardous, life-threatening occupation." Brooke dismisses that claim, pointing instead to a really dangerous gig--professional fishing--and noting, "there are no cases awarding commercial fisherman more than 50% of the marital estate." We think the Earnhardt family might side with Jeff on this one. (5 pages)

This divorce battle is really caught in a "Matrix."
