Chris Webber Admits Receiving Gift Of Cake

In testimony before a federal grand jury, NBA All-Star Chris Webber lied about whether he received illegal gifts while playing in the early-90s for the University of Michigan, according to a superseding indictment unsealed today (1/17). During an August 2000 grand jury appearance, the Sacramento King testified that he could not recall whether booster Eddie Martin gave him and his family $280,000 or paid for a girlfriend's "medical procedure." But Webber was, amazingly, pretty confident that Martin had provided him with delicious post-game cake. Martin, who pleaded guilty last year to money laundering charges, is cooperating with prosecutors in the federal probe of Webber and members of the athlete's family. Webber's allegedly selective memory is detailed in this entertaining excerpt from the indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Michigan. The superseding indictment hits Webber, his father, and his aunt with additional perjury counts for lying to a grand jury investigating Martin's illegal gambling. The trio was first indicted in September 2002. (4 pages)
