A Knick Knocking Boots

As huge New York Knicks fans, The Smoking Gun (proud owner of season tickets in Section 345--stop on by!) salutes Marcus Camby and Latrell Sprewell for their marvelous playoff efforts. That being said, here's a document from the TSG Archives detailing the lengths a would-be agent once went to sign Camby, then a star at the University of Massachusetts. Along with lavishing gifts on Camby and his pals, attorney Wesley Spears convinced a law client, one Shalija Castaneda, to have sex with the athlete in his dorm room to help cinch the deal (Spears wanted to "make Marcus happy," Castaneda recalled). During another recruiting session--this one at Spears's Connecticut home--Camby and a buddy jointly had sex with a hooker while Spears took Polaroids of the trio. Camby eventually opted for other representation, which so angered Spears that he allegedly threatened to go public with details of the collegian's sex romps. As this excerpt from the arrest warrant shows, Hartford police charged Spears with attempted larceny and promoting prostitution. (6 pages)
