There was a time--back before Waco, Ruby Ridge, Filegate, etc.--that the
Federal Bureau of Investigation was the shining star of American law
enforcement. When J. Edgar Hoover ran the show, he was on top of
everything: from Martin Luther King Jr's love life to the dangerous Red
Menace. Heck, Hoover even kept an eye on the swill emerging from
Hollywood, so that he could be certain the FBI was always portrayed in a
positive light in movies and television programs. Here's a memo describing
