New Bedford, Massachusetts school officials have recommended that nearly 100 junior high school students take blood tests after learning that a veteran science teacher last year had students draw blood using the same needle. As part of a class experiment that involved examining blood samples under a microscope, teacher Kevin Cadieux sought volunteers who were willing to use a lancet that Cadieux, who has since retired, carried in connection with his diabetes (the lancet was apparently used with a blood sugar testing machine). As first reported by New Bedford's Standard-Times, this letter was just sent to parents at the Keith Junior High School regarding Cadieux's bizarre May 2001 classroom experiment. According to a lawyer for the New Bedford schools, about two dozen students used the lancet, which Cadieux wiped with alcohol between uses. (1 page)
