It's tax season again, so The Smoking Gun is scrambling to find those stray receipts from the Salvation Army--otherwise, our meager philanthropy will go undeducted. That, however, is not a problem for scores of celebrities who have formed foundations to manage their charitable donations. In most instances, stars like Jay Leno and Will Smith donate directly to their foundations. That money is then usually invested in stocks, bonds, or treasury bills, the dividends from which are used to make contributions to groups ranging from the Gay Men's Health Crisis to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation.

In this extensive collection of documents, The Smoking Gun looks at more than 40 groups to determine which celebrity foundations are generous and which need encouragement. Through Freedom of Information Act requests filed with the Internal Revenue Service, TSG compiled scores of tax returns filed by these foundations. In most cases, the documents we received cover calendar year 1997, the most recent year for which records are available. Some reports, however, did include partial accountings for 1998 charitable activity.

Below you'll find the documents arranged into 12 categories to make it easier for you to follow the money. If you'd like to read about some of our favorite parts of the documents, click here. Without further ado, the TSG Celebrity Charity Review:
